It's the longest day of the year so let's get outside.

If you are only going to do one camping and cycling trip in 2026, let it be this one. It's fun, the hills are at an absolute minimum, and it's camping on flat ground with a pavilion, picnic tables, and grills. This quick overnight trip is a celebration of bringing people together to ride bikes and camp outdoors. You don't need 14,000ft peaks, you don't have to be a racer, you don't have to ride 3000 miles, you don't need to spend money on the newest equipment. Use what you have, and reach out if you need to borrow camping equipment.

But your brakes do have to work and helmets are required! Each rider is responsible for their own food and shelter. This trip is for all fitness levels and all body types and is excellent for first-timers because it's 2 days and 1 night with 25 miles of riding and 1000ft of hill climbing in total. That means 10 miles there, 10 miles back, and food stops from the campsite are 5 miles round trip. This is a sunshine-preferred ride. Our storm date will be one day earlier, from Friday the 19th - Saturday the 20th.

We price this trip at the minimum to cover insurance costs and make a donation to the community park we're staying in. Lichen Bike Tours isn't making any money on this since it's more about participation in Swift Campout. It's an international northern hemisphere cycling and camping event on the summer solstice every year, organized by bicycle bags maker Swift Industries. "Pack up your camp gear to spend the longest day on your bike."

Brief Itinerary

Arrive having already had your breakfast because we won't spend time in the town of Hudson on Saturday. Riders pre-trip meeting and safety check on Saturday at 12 noon with wheels down by 12:30pm. We ride 15 miles on public roads and go past 2 spots for camping, and we set up camp at the better of the two which has a covered pavilion, metal grills, and a flat area for setting up tents. In camp riders are free to do whatever they want - ride to town for groceries, campfire cooking, gear shakedown requests, fishing, photographing wildlife... Everyone cooks their own dinners as the sun sets and we socialize until its sleepy time.

In the morning riders prepare their own coffee and breakfasts as we all take our sweet time packing up. We ride 15 miles back to our starting point in Hudson, NY and the goal is to return by 10am on Sunday June 21st. Some folks will have to leave right away, but your guide will stay around for a couple hours if you want to eat together.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is for anyone who wants to go cycling and camping in a group of around 15 people. All fitness levels and all body types can have a great time. This trip will be great for a beginner and great for an experienced rider who wants a relaxed trip with lots of time off the bike.

You must be comfortable cycling on public roads that get vehicle traffic. At the pre-departure group meeting we will discuss expected behaviors for safe cycling on public roads.

Where and when do we meet?

  • Saturday, June 20th on the sidewalk in front of the Amtrak train station in Hudson, NY
  • 12pm noon riders pre-departure group meeting and safety check.
  • 12:30pm wheels spinning and we are on our way.
  • Sunday, June 21st around 10am we will return to the same location.

What's the campsite like?

We will be primitive camping in a public park. The site is very flat and perfect for tent camping. Hammocks will be difficult. There is a covered pavilion with picnic tables and there are metal grills that make cooking as easy as possible. There's a portapotty nearby but no water supply. Riders will have to carry their own water.

What do we do at the campsite?

Once in camp, riders are free to do whatever they want - more riding, campfire cooking, gear shakedown requests... A lot of time is passed just sitting around and talking. You will be free to ride to the nearest town (Germantown, NY) for supplies.

What do I pack?

After you sign up, then you will receive a full gear packing checklist. Broadly speaking, each rider should bring their own bike, flat fix kit, and bags/racks/baskets that attach to the frame of the bike for carrying: a shelter, a sleeping system, food, toiletries, clothes for camp, clothes for riding the bike, a rain jacket, several water bottles, and a helmet.
