On Friday we cycle 20 miles from Hudson, NY across the river to a sweet little private campground with lots of amenities in the sunset shadow of the Great Northern Catskills. We'll have 2 nights there, which sets us up for a whole day of riding without heavy bags on Saturday. There will be lots of half-day and whole-day routes to choose from, including MTB trails. Sunday AM our hosts will lead us on a 90min walk and forest interpretation around their agroforestry grounds before we depart on the 20 miles back to the Amtrak station in Hudson.

Helmets required! This trip is for all fitness levels and all body types and totally worth traveling for. Nighttime luminance brought to us by the last full moon of Spring.

Connect with old and new friends while all-day on Saturday you ride some great rural roads that are as flat/hilly as you feel like riding. For riders with big plans in 2026, this trip is an opportunity to do an early-season test run of any new gear and do a shakedown before your longer trips. If you're new to camping or new to using your bike frame to carry camping equipment, this is an easy trial to see if you like it. The community of experienced riders will be so encouraging, and your guide will ensure that nobody is left alone with a flat tire or carrying too heavy a load.

What's Included:

  • 2 nights at a quiet, private campground with many comforts - 3 bathrooms, 2 showers, a shared sink for dish washing, electrical outlets in campsite, firepits with cooking grills in campsite, covered picnic table in campsite, a shared pavilion and large fire pit for all campground guests, and morning coffee!
  • Sunday morning 90-minute nature walk and forest interpretive session led by our hosts Justin and Anna
  • 10-minute ride from the campground to a grocery store, restaurants, an espresso shop, and a brewery in Cairo, NY
  • Flexible arrivals - riders have the option to drive to the campground in their personal vehicle instead of cycling to the train station on Friday/Sunday.
  • Friday night welcome fire and s'mores
  • Everyone prepares their own meals, and Saturday night is the best chance for folks to cook together over the campfire or on their camping stove.
  • Saturday all-day riding while our tents stay in camp under secure monitoring by our hosts.
  • Saturday variety of cycling routes to choose from, including: great local mountain bike trails in Round Top, NY; paved roads through the foothills of the Catskills; a big climb up to the Catskill Plateau. All these routes are custom created for this event.
  • CPR and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certified guide carrying first aid kit

This trip is 3 days and 2 nights with a total of 40 miles of riding between the campground and train station, plus whatever you choose to ride on Saturday.

You can read more about what to expect at these FAQs for LBT trips.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is for anyone who wants to go cycling and camping in a group of around 15 people. All fitness levels and all body types can have a great time. This trip will be great for a beginner and great for an experienced rider who wants a relaxed trip with lots of time off the bike.

You must be comfortable cycling on public roads that get vehicle traffic. At the pre-departure group meeting we will discuss expected behaviors for safe cycling on public roads.

Where and when do we meet?

  • Friday, May 29th on the sidewalk in front of the Amtrak train station in Hudson, NY
  • 5pm riders pre-departure group meeting and safety check.
  • 5:15pm wheels spinning and we are on our way.
  • Sunday, May 31st around 2pm we will return to the same location.

What's the campground like?

We will be primitive camping on private land, and the site is very flat and perfect for tent camping. Hammocks will be difficult. The list of amenities is long, and it's detailed in the 'What's Included' section above. It's an idyllic setting with crickets hopping, but probably too early for the fireflies. With clear skies we will see the huge full moon rising behind the treetops.

What do we do at the campground?

Once in camp, riders are free to do whatever they want - more riding, campfire cooking, gear shakedown requests... A lot of time is passed just sitting around and talking.

What do I pack?

If you sign up, then you will receive a full gear packing checklist. Broadly speaking, each rider should bring their own bike, flat fix kit, and bags/racks/baskets that attach to the frame of the bike for carrying: a shelter, a sleeping system, food, toiletries, clothes for camp, clothes for riding the bike, a rain jacket, several water bottles, and a helmet.
