2 days riding to the Catskills with a night of camping in Overlook Mountain Wild Forest outside Woodstock, NY.

This weekend adventure is for riders who enjoy moderate hills and are willing to do one big climb up Macdaniel Rd at the end of the day on Saturday. We are camping halfway up Overlook Mountain, but get ready because the final 6 miles up to the campsite is around 1000ft of climbing.

Sunday AM we go straight down that hill the steep way on Meads Mountain Rd (not the way we climb). On Sunday the return journey is 32 miles, 1300ft climbing, so Day 2 is much less strenuous compared to Saturday's totals of 36 miles, 3000ft climbing.

Meal planning is kept easy with food stops in the town of Woodstock. Helmets and strong brakes required. We will have one night of primitive camping in the public forest preserve at dispersed sites. There are no facilities, except for 2 portapotties a quarter mile from our campsite. Everyone is responsible for carrying their own shelter and sleep systems that you need to be comfortable and warm. Expect overnight temps below 40f.

If you're new to camping or new to using your bike frame to carry camping equipment, you can enjoy this trip but just know that it doesn't have many comforts built in.

What To Expect:

  • Pre-trip group info session by video call
  • Your guide will ensure that nobody is left alone with a flat tire or carrying too heavy a load
  • 1 night of camping at dispersed campsites in a forest preserve with phone service and a short walk from two portapotties
  • Resupply stops in Woodstock for food, ice cream, and water refills
  • Scenic stops along the way with mountain vistas, a waterfall, and hiking trail at Sloan Gorge preserve
  • CPR and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certified guide carrying first aid kit

-----DETAILS -----

What's the overall mileage/elevation?

This trip is 2 days and 1 night with a total of 68 miles of riding and 4400ft of climbing.

Who is this trip for?

This trip is for anyone who wants to go cycling and camping in a group of less than 10 people. Riders comfortable with constant uphills can have a great time. You must be comfortable cycling on public roads that get vehicle traffic. At the pre-departure group meeting we will discuss expected behaviors for safe cycling on public roads.

Where and when do we meet?

  • Saturday, Oct 3rd in the parking lot of the Hudson ____ train
  • 9am riders pre-departure group meeting and safety check
  • 9:15am wheels spinning and we are on our way
  • Sunday, Oct 4th around 4pm we will return to the same location

What's the campsite like?

We will be primitive camping on public lands in the forest preserve, and the site is very flat and perfect for tent camping. Hammocks will work great too. There are no facilities, except for two portapotties a quarter mile from the campsite.

What do we do at the campsite?

Once in camp, riders are free to do whatever they want - more riding, campfire cooking... A lot of time is passed just sitting around and talking.

What do I pack?

If you sign up, then you will receive a full gear packing checklist. Broadly speaking, each rider should bring their own bike, flat fix kit, and bags/racks/baskets that attach to the frame of the bike for carrying: a shelter, a sleeping system, food, toiletries, clothes for camp, clothes for riding the bike, a rain jacket, several water bottles, and a helmet.

You can read more about what to expect at these FAQs for trips with Lichen Bike Tours.
